GKA heads successful National Learning in Deprived Communities bid for North Kent

Following its success in leading the North Kent strand of the Laying the Foundation project, GKA has been successful in its bid for NLDC funding for North Kent. Working with our partners, Amicus-Horizon, Medway CVS, North West Kent CVS and Church and Society, we will offer a range of learning opportunities to people in some of the most deprived communities in the area.

The bid team was lead by Cheryl Bartlett, one of GKA’s Skills Co-ordinators. Cheryl will be working closely with our partners to deliver the project, valued at approximately £200 000.

Valuing Volunteering Packs Well Received

The Valuing Volunteering packs, produced by GKA in conjunction with Aimhigher, have been well received by community groups in North Kent.

The packs are designed to be used by voluntary organisations to assess the skills and training needs of their volunteers, and they have been enthusiastically welcomed by voluntary groups across the area.

If you would like further information on the packs, please contact Cheryl Bartlett or find them on our Gateway Learning website.

Careers Highlighted at Learning Toolkit Event

The third annual celebration event for the Kent Thameside Learning Toolkit took place in Dartford on Friday 11th July 2008. Representatives of eight schools displayed information about some of the careers in key economic sectors which are set to grow in Kent Thameside.

The event was well received by the representatives of local employers and local authorities who attended, as well as the school students themselves. The St Georges School display on maritime skills was the most highly rated by attendees, followed by Gravesend Grammar. Learners felt that they found out most from the display presented by Wilmington Grammar School for Boys.

The Walk Tall Academy concluded the event with their Licence to Skill theatrical sketch. Other areas are now anxious to reproduce the success of the learning toolkit and we are all looking forward to next year’s project. If you would like any more information, please contact Chrissie Lawler.
